Congratulations to Sharon Shanks, workforce development manager for the Knoxville Chamber, on her completion of the Fellowship for Education Attainment launched by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). Throughout the year-long Fellowship, all Fellows developed regional action plans addressing specific education attainment or workforce development issues in their communities.
Shanks focused on regional awareness of work based learning opportunities to help with determining post-secondary options for Innovation Valley. Ensuring education and workforce skills and training needs are being met for all of Innovation Valley’s target clusters is a strategic priority of the Innovation Valley team.
“The need for the future workforce to become interested in advanced manufacturing or technically skilled jobs continue to concern our region,” said Shanks. “It is crucial to expose students to these industries early. We are currently working with our state and local partners to recruit businesses willing to participate in work based learning.”
The cohort of fellows were chosen to participate in the immersive year-long fellowship based on their demonstrated commitment and passion for improving the birth-to-career education pipeline in their communities. Shanks was one of twenty chamber of commerce professionals to be selected for the executive development program.
This fellowship program serves to advance chambers’ previously defined education attainment goals and ultimately help business associations around the country build replicable programs.
